Code Club

(Year 4-6 pupils, Monday 12.30 - 13.00)

We are very fortunate to have Steve Iglis and Harriet Craven from the Sanger Institute volunteering to run Code Club in our school.  They are also supported by Mrs Douglas.

This year, pupils have been busy taking part in various computing projects in Code Club, from Scratch, Python to exploring Rasberry Pi.  Pupils have also showcased their projects to parents and the rest of the school.

Pupils have also been invited to the Sanger Institute to talk with computing experts in the field and to take part in some very exciting hands-on activities.  Here is a link to a report of the visit: https://sangerinstitute.blog/2019/09/16/coding-the-future/

If your child is interested in joining Code Club, please speak to Mrs Douglas or a member of the office staff.

Quotes from Code Club pupils and parents:

"Code club is the best place you could ever be. You get to make stuff using the wonders of coding, computering and lots of funny words. Oh, and sprites."  - pupil

"Henry very much enjoys code club and it motivates him to pursue a career in technology. Thank you!" - parent

"My son thoroughly enjoys Code Club, and is learning patience and attention to detail while having fun making his own games." - parent

"My child loves Code Club. Coding has taught them about how to approach problem solving, work with others, trial and error, perseverance, the importance of every detail and focus - it has all been very positive. And not just for their work on computers either - it has increased their confidence in other subjects too.  A big thank you to the Sanger Institute for supporting this initiative." - parent

Chess Club

Monday 8.00 - 8.45 a.m. (Years 1 - 6)

The chess club has been busy this year.

All members of the club are familiar with the fundamentals, such as checkmate, stalemate, value of the pieces and profitable exchange on the chess board. We have continued to expand our knowledge of the game and have focused on improving our playing skills by learning how to make more accurate evaluation of our chess positions.  Many pupils also studied plenty of chess at home using the outstanding online chess tutor www.learningchess.net

The school has entered the Cambridge Chess Championship, which is a team tournament run over six Saturdays during the academic year. We came a respectable 11th out of 24 participating schools. Congratulations to core members of the Newton and Harston team: Yoav, Oren, William, Benjamin, Ben, Bryn, Noah and Isaac. Please take a look at www.cambridgechess.co.uk for detailed information.

In the Spring term we have run the Delancey UK Chess Challenge, which is a nationwide tournament, with over a thousand British schools taking part. The first section of the UK Chess Challenge was a seven-round in-house tournament. Many children have qualified for the Megafinal, the second section of this exciting nationwide chess bonanza. The Megafinal on April 30th was a full-day very tough tournament, and three of our pupils (Yoav, Oren and Benjamin) have qualified for the Northern Gigafinal.

Congratulations! We wish them the very best luck!
